Greening the Glass Bowl
Before the Rockets hit the field for last Saturday's home opener, a team of undergraduate students tackled the beds outside Glass Bowl Stadium.
Will Reeves, a freshman majoring in environmental science, was among a team of undergraduate students in Greening UToledo through Service (GUTS) who tackled beds outside Glass Bowl Stadium prior to Saturday's home opener.
Greening UToledo through Service (GUTS) is a student-facilitated service-learning initiative that aims to increase biodiversity on campus by establishing and maintaining native landscapes. Students who work or volunteer through the program learn how to harvest and store seeds, germinate and transfer seedlings, and tend to native gardens as they get their hands dirty at nearly a dozen beds across Main Campus.
These beds include two on the north side of Glass Bowl Stadium.
Native plants are attractive as low-maintenance species with deep root systems that filter water runoff, sequester carbon and bring other environmental benefits to their ecosystems, as the students learn through GUTS.
The program aligns with a new experience-based initiative, Applied Skills for Career Experience, Networking and Development (ASCEND), being rolled out for incoming undergraduate students across the University this fall.
GUTS will host its first-ever workshops this fall. Dr. Todd Crail, a Distinguished University Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Sciences who oversees GUTS, will present a hands-on introduction to landscaping with plants native to the Oak Openings Region, including topics like seed collection, plant propagation and invasive species control.
Workshops will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 31, in Bowman-Oddy Laboratories. Registration is required online in advance.
