IDNR recognizes 2026 outstanding volunteers of the year

SPRINGFIELD - Six individuals and organizations have been recognized as 2026 outstanding volunteers of the year for their contributions to conservation on behalf of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).

"IDNR is grateful to have dedicated volunteers and support groups that bolster Illinois state parks, historic sites, and museums," IDNR Interim Director Renee Snow said. "I'm pleased to recognize the amazing work these dedicated volunteers do for the people of Illinois."

The 2026 IDNR outstanding volunteers of the year are:

Rich Dependahl, Valmeyer

Rich Dependahl is president of the Salt Lick Point Stewardship volunteer conservation group. The organization started when the Village of Valmeyer registered and permanently protected the now-594 acres of Salt Lick Point Land and Water Reserve. Dependahl oversaw the establishment and development of local volunteers to help implement conservation and education projects at the reserve.

Janice Helge, Chicago

Janice Helge has been a dedicated volunteer at the Pullman State Historic Site in Chicago. She has researched and indexed the history of the churches in the historic Pullman district and has advocated for saving historic buildings in the community, including Reformation Lutheran Church. She also shares her knowledge on the Pullman website.

Francie Staggs, Springfield

Francie Staggs has been a volunteer with state historic sites in Springfield for 13 years. She has contributed thousands of hours of her time to the Dana-Thomas House, the Old State Capitol, the Lincoln Tomb, and the Governor's Mansion. She enthusiastically greets visitors, helps with special events and shares her knowledge of these state historic sites with the public.

Pamela Grivetti, Peru

Pamela Grivetti has dedicated more than 50 years of volunteer service to Starved Rock State Park, its visitors and the surrounding community. Her vision and commitment led to the creation of the Starved Rock Historical and Educational Foundation in 1991, establishing an organization that continues to support the park through education, preservation and visitor services.

Steve Gariepy, Murphysboro

For nearly 20 years, Steve Gariepy has conducted interpretive and environmental education programs at Giant City State Park in Jackson County. He has done this not only for the park itself, but for other organizations, including Touch of Nature and Land for Learning. In his most recent position with the Southern Illinois University Carbondale STEM Center, Griepy has taken the initiative to conduct numerous student service-learning events.

Gene Anderson, Streator

Gene Anderson is an active volunteer at Starved Rock State Park. He participates in weekly hikes with the Starved Rock Walkers Club and cleans up litter along the trails. He welcomes park visitors at the front desk of the visitor center every Friday, providing visitors with trail suggestions and park information. He also serves as a member of the Starved Rock Foundation board.

McLean County Sportsmen's Association, Bloomington

The McLean County Sportsmen's Association (MCSA) was founded in 1991 in coordination with other local hunting and fishing clubs to promote a positive public image of local sportsmen. The association routinely holds fundraisers, fishing derbies, hunts, tournaments and safety education courses for youth. MCSA has donated to numerous youth, health, education, veteran, and first responder organizations and others over the years.
