ABC Launches “Future Voices” for Southeast Asia’s Emerging Media Leaders

ABC International Development (ABCID), the media development arm of Australian Broadcasting Corporation, has launched a new three-year initiative, Future Voices, aimed at equipping emerging media professionals across Southeast Asia with leadership and digital journalism skills.

Timed to coincide with Australia hosting the AFC Women's Asian Cup, the programme brings participants to Brisbane and the Gold Coast for an intensive two-week experience. During this period, they receive hands-on mentoring, mobile journalism training at live matches, and the opportunity to earn a micro-credential in Leadership and Sports Diplomacy at Griffith University.

According to ABC International, the initiative draws on the organisation's experience in building independent, ethical, and inclusive newsrooms, while strengthening regional collaboration and championing greater female participation in both news and sports media.

The programme is designed to equip participants with practical, real-world reporting capabilities-from live commentary and interviews to match-day coverage-within a fast-paced international sporting environment. Upon completion, participants return to their respective organisations with enhanced editorial, leadership, and management skills.

Supported by the ASEAN-Australia Centre under the Australian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Future Voices also aims to deepen ties between Australia and Southeast Asia. Beyond technical training, the initiative places strong emphasis on fostering long-term professional networks and encouraging diverse, independent reporting across the region.

With a new cohort set to be introduced each year, Future Voices reflects a broader commitment to strengthening media capability and shaping a more connected and resilient broadcasting landscape in the Asia-Pacific.
