EU Statement - 60th Anniversary of ICERD Celebration

60th Anniversary of ICERD Celebration

EU statement

Mr. President,

The European Union would like to warmly thank the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination for hosting today's event marking the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

After 60 years, much progress has been achieved, and societies have become more open, tolerant and multicultural. Yet, this International Convention remains more relevant than ever, as racism and racial discrimination endure in societies across the world, including in Europe.

This important anniversary needs to mark a renewed commitment from all signatory States to move towards a fuller and more effective implementation of the Convention, which remains a very comprehensive body of work, including by cooperating with the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination as well as relevant special procedures. In addition, we call on all States that have not yet done so to ratify and implement this Convention, which remains the universal foundation of efforts to prevent, combat, and eliminate racism.

In this regard, the EU has put in place a comprehensive legal and policy framework. Racial and ethnic discrimination is prohibited in the EU Treaties, by the Charter of Fundamental Rights, and through numerous EU Regulations and Directives, which refer to and are inspired by ICERD. In addition, to revamp its engagement, in January the European Commission will present a new EU Anti-Racism Strategy, laying out new and ambitious objectives to fight racism and racial discrimination across the EU.

Mr. President,

In a context of growing polarisation and discrimination in societies, today's celebrations serve as an important reminder to all, urging us to firmly combat all forms of intolerance, racism, xenophobia, and all other forms of discrimination. The EU confirms once again its full support to ICERD, and reiterates its commitment towards its full and effective implementation.

I thank you.
