Albertsons Library is launching a major transformation of its technology infrastructure to strengthen Boise State University's research ecosystem. For the first time in over 20 years, the library will migrate its foundational system, replacing the Voyager catalog with FOLIO, a modern, open-source library services platform.
Voyager will reach end-of-life in June 2026, necessitating a new system to support the evolving needs of students, faculty and staff. The library determined that FOLIO is the only platform that meets the university's long-term requirements for flexibility and sustainability.
"This migration signals a new way of managing the complex infrastructure required to provide access to an academic library," said Michelle Armstrong, associate dean. "It positions Albertsons Library to be more agile, transparent and data-informed in how we serve the university community."
Unlike proprietary systems controlled by a single vendor, FOLIO is built collaboratively by a global community of libraries. This open-source model ensures Boise State retains control over how its core systems evolve and allows for integration with other campus technologies. The platform's modular architecture supports deeper connections with research information systems and creates opportunities for future service innovations.
The move marks a new chapter for the university, rooted in strategy and adaptability. For students and faculty, the transition will result in improved resource discovery and a platform designed for a digital-first research environment.
