Pennacchio Asks U.S. Attorney's Office to Expand Investigation of Voter Registration Scandal

Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-Morris, Passaic) is calling on Assistant U.S. Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon to expand their investigation of the registration and voting of non-citizens in the State of New Jersey. Recently, Governor Sherrill said that a "computer glitch" caused 6,600 non-citizens to register to vote and that 400 actually voted. IDEMIA, the company who services the MVC denies their involvement and says the fault lies with the N.J. Department of State and the Division of Elections, which did not conduct proper oversight.

It has recently been disclosed that included in the pool of potential jury participants were 75,000 names of non-citizens. Senator Pennacchio pointed to the fact that the New Jersey Judiciary compiles its list of prospective jury applicants primarily from sources like the MVC, Division of Elections, and the Division of Taxation.

The Department of Homeland Security previously reported over 35,000 potential non-citizens on N.J.'s voter rolls.

"The disclosure that 75,000 non-citizens were summoned as potential members of juries screams for a thorough federal investigation," said Senator Pennacchio. "The Governor has blamed IDEMIA, the Murphy Administration and of course President Donald Trump for their ever-increasing numbers. What is of concern to me is that there may exist in these ever-increasing numbers a large pool of undocumented immigrants which may be drawn from to potentially change an election."

Senator Pennacchio introduced a bill, S-1332, that would establish additional election safeguards by requiring the state to cross-check voter records with jury records to identify and remove ineligible registrations. The bill was first introduced in 2021 by Senator Pennacchio.

The Senator called the Governor's call for an independent investigation a "whitewash."

"As the scope of this problem grows daily and with the refusal of the Democrat Legislature to investigate, it is obvious the U.S. Attorney General's office must take charge," concluded Senator Pennacchio.
