The application round will provide an opportunity for developers to apply for feasibility permits under New Zealand's offshore renewable energy regime. A feasibility permit allows developers to undertake feasibility studies and assess the viability of developing a potential offshore wind project within a specified permit area. After feasibility work is complete, a developer must obtain a commercial permit and any other required consents before constructing and operating an offshore renewable energy development.

Applications will be invited for either of the following designated offshore areas:

  • Offshore Taranaki
  • Offshore Waikato / South Auckland

Further information on eligibility requirements, the application process, assessment criteria, and permit conditions, will be available on the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) website when the application round opens.

Applications open on 19 October 2026 and close on 19 April 2027.
