Richard Rankin Takes on the Role of the Narrator at Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

- Famed for his roles in Rebus and Outlander, acclaimed Scottish actor Richard Rankin has been announced as the voice of the Narrator of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2026 Show, A Call To Gather.

Taking on the prestigious role for the first time, Richard will lend his unmistakable Scottish voice and storytelling talents to the production. The Narrator's role is to guide audiences through the emotional and theatrical journey of A Call To Gather. Across 26 shows in August, this will be brought to life with specially pre-recorded narration, allowing Richard to bring a new dimension to the storytelling experience at Edinburgh Castle Esplanade.

The 2026 Show will celebrate connection, community and shared identity, drawing together music, military tradition, dance and performance from across the globe against the iconic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

Best known for his acclaimed screen performances in Outlander, Rebus and a celebrated career across television, film and theatre, Richard has worked with the creative team to help shape the tone, emotion and experience of the Edinburgh Tattoo.

This collaboration continues the Tattoo's evolving focus on immersive storytelling and cinematic theatricality, building on the creative direction introduced in recent shows.

This year the Narrator, while voiced by Rankin, will be represented by The Call Statue, as recently revealed by Creative Director Alan Lane. The Call 1914 Statue, also known as The Scottish American War Memorial is a striking bronze monument in West Princes Street Gardens. It honours the Scottish soldiers who answered the call from around the globe and served in World War I.

Richard Rankin said: "To be the Narrator at The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo this year is an incredible honour. It will be such a privilege to be part of the experience for thousands of people across the month of August.

"I've been every year for the last 6 years and it just gets better and better. For me, it's so hard to describe the Tattoo because it's so unique. It's the coming together of music, culture, military and creativity brought to life by performers, musicians and dancers from all around the world. It really is rivalled by nothing, so I encourage you all to attend!"

Alan Lane, Creative Director of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, said: "Richard brings a huge amount of emotional depth, character and warmth to A Call To Gather, and from the earliest creative conversations it was clear he had a passion for the Tattoo that we were looking for our audiences to feel throughout the show.

"As Narrator, Richard's voice will become an important thread running through the production, helping guide audiences through moments of spectacle, reflection and celebration.

"His storytelling instincts and deep connection to Scottish arts made him a natural fit for the Tattoo, and it's been great to work together."

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo returns for their 2026 Show, A Call to Gather from 7-29 August and tickets can be purchased at edintattoo.co.uk/tickets or on the phone on 0131 225 1188.
