Senator Marshall Joins The FOX News Rundown

On the Democrat shutdown of DHS:
"More than 60 days that DHS has not been funded by the Democrats. It puts our nation at risk, and I don't have to tell you or anybody that we're concerned about terrorist threats right now. So, over the break, the Senate passed through a unanimous consent process - funding for all of DHS except ICE and the Border Patrol. We thought the House would probably pass that, but they're balking, and that's okay; they want to make sure that we're going to go through with reconciliation to fund the Border Patrol and ICE as well. And I think that's a reasonable expectation. So that's where we are this week, our focus right now is this reconciliation bill that would fund ICE and Border Patrol."
On a reconciliation bill to fund ICE and Border Patrol:
"Right, I think the President's given us a June 1st deadline to get it done, and I think that's a very reasonable expectation. You know, in my conversation with my friends over at the House, they certainly want to see us make some progress on the reconciliation bill, and again, I think that's reasonable. We need a bill that we can get 50 votes over here for, and that's why I think it needs to be a skinny bill. We're very much focused just on paying Border Patrol and ICE. Look, I'd love to get some of these other things in it, I'd love to get the SAVE America Act in it, and I'm sure I could think of 20 things I'd like to get in it. But number one, the Parliamentarian is going to throw a lot of that out, and then number two, sometimes we start losing votes. We have three votes to spare, the house only has four votes to spare."
"You got it, Dave, and I've learned a lot about this reconciliation, unfortunately. But we have to reconcile the budget, so it has to have some type of financial impact, and that financial impact needs to be more than a policy impact. So we were able to defund Planned Parenthood through our Working Family Tax Cuts bill, because we focus on the funding of it, but we weren't able to outlaw abortion, just to sum things up there really quickly. So I think it'll be the same type of thing - maybe we can touch a little bit of the SAVE America Act, maybe we could do more funding to provide funding for checking IDs and states that require it, but it's going to be hard to change that entire policy under reconciliation. And the Parliamentarian is the person that decides what is allowable and what's not allowable."
"Yeah, at the end of the day, Americans will be safer. And once again, we're funding border security, funding your family safety with Republican only votes. And I really think that I'd like to spend this whole morning just talking about why aren't we holding the Democrats accountable for not funding this? But regardless, we have to figure out a way to get it done with just Republican votes. The reconciliation process allows us to keep American families safe and fund DHS along with Border Patrol and ICE."
On the Democrats' refusal to support law enforcement:
"Well, I think it will be on the ballot, and it's going to be up to Americans to decide, you know, what type of priority are they going to put for their families. The Democrats are the party of defund the police - they're the party of open borders. Republicans are the party of secure the border, of fund the police to make your family safer. And I think what also will be on the ballot, though, is sanctuary cities and how they impact the situation. And I would lay out that none of those things happen in Minneapolis if the police were cooperating with ICE. And regardless of that, we do need to take a close look at that - I think that there are things that could have been done better by both sides, but none of that happens if it wasn't for the sanctuary city policies of Minneapolis. And then this backdrop of all the fraud that's going on there as well."
"So I think there's things that we can control and we can't control. Look, a third of America hates Donald Trump, and they are very motivated to vote against him. We need to give Republicans a reason to be motivated, and that's why we need to get locked in on the economy. Anyway, shape, and form, there's a significant number of people out there that are struggling. Folks that because of Biden inflation - inflation is cumulative - that under four years under Joe Biden we saw the cost of housing, healthcare, childcare, property insurance, go up 50%. And that's still stinging people, even though today wages are outpacing inflation, so net wages are increasing. And we had a little hiccup in this last month because of gas prices - and we'll probably get there in a second - but I think in the long term, what we can control is the economy. And again, keep reminding Americans that we are the party of secure borders and law and order. The Democrats are the party of defund the police. But ultimately, the November ballot decides all this, right?"
On how the Iran conflict is affecting prices:
"Well, 90% of the national media is out to frame Donald Trump, and their hatred is just as palpable as this far left is, and they're complicit in that hatred. That's how they make a living, is selling hatred on their on their nightly news shows. So I think that it is absolutely a challenge, and regardless, what we need to stay focused on is that economy. I hope it's a short blip - to your point, the prices never come down as quick as as they go up - but we do hope that there's a quick end to this war. And I'm just going to frame it this way: if we let Iran have nuclear weapons, the price of gasoline would be $10 a gallon. If Iran had nuclear weapons, they would hold the whole world hostage; they would close the Strait of Hormuz anyway. Could you imagine if North Korea had the income from oil that Iran has, what they would be like? What a loose cannon that they are already. So look, I understand I'm asking Americans to make sacrifices, just like my grandparents and parents made sacrifices in World War Two and I hope this is short. The good news is, we're the largest producer of oil in the world. No one's standing in line, no one's asking you set your thermostats down, and all the different things. I think that there's hope around the corner. Our Working Family Tax Cuts bill is going to allow Americans, on average, two out of three Americans are going to get a refund this year, an income tax refund. Two out of three Americans! And here it is, Tax Day - I think that's the good news. And by the way, that average refund is going to be between $2,000-4,000. So I feel people's pain on the price of gasoline, I hope we get this war over sooner than later, but there's sometimes sacrifices made for the safety of your family."
On whether America can ever trust Iran:
"Dave, the answer of course is no, and even the deal that Obama cut with them would allow them to have nuclear weapons by 2030, if not sooner. So that's why President Trump tore that up, is it was fool's gold to begin with. But no, we'll never trust them - we always have to verify, right? You know, go back to President Reagan, and I kind of feel like we're at that same point - that JD Vance walked away from a bad deal, let's get a good deal. We can trust them a little bit, but mostly we have to work on the verification."
On tax refunds for most Americans:
"Yeah, well you know, the proof is in the pudding when people get those checks. And to your point, people always feel taxes are too high, and they are, but at least from a federal tax standpoint, when people's average refund is that $2,000-4,000 of refund, that's going to buy a few groceries for them. Think about this - usually only about 60, 62% of Americans get a refund but this year it's going to be some 70% are going to get a refund as well. But property taxes is what I hear a lot about and of course, that's locally controlled, so there is some education to do and most people just lump all their taxes together. And I know what it's like, you know, my daughter recently said, "Dad, they took half of my paycheck out for one thing or another," including, of course, health insurance. So all these things are cumulative; they all come together, and we need to address all of them, whether it's property. What can we do to bring property taxes down? Well, that's really the state governments' need to get under control and get the cost of education under control. So I'm all in but, but we should celebrate today. For the first time in decades, we can say Happy Tax Day, you all are going to get a refund of $2,000-4,000. At least 70% of Americans are getting a $2,000-4,000 tax refund today."
