Statement From Representative Mannion (NY-22) on Military Action Against Iran

SYRACUSE, NY - Representative John W. Mannion (NY-22) today released the following statement on the U.S. military action against Iran: "Donald Trump's war of choice is a shocking, willful disregard for the Constitution launched with undefined objectives and no clear case of an imminent threat to the United States.

The ambiguity of this conflict is highlighted by the lack of an allied coalition, which may further erode American stature and global leadership - damage we have repeatedly seen under this president.

Only Congress has the power to declare war and the bipartisan Iran War Powers Resolution currently under discussion should come to the floor for a vote.

Iran's regime is dangerous and can never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. But we have learned, at enormous cost in Iraq and Afghanistan, that overthrowing governments, particularly in a highly militarized nation of 90 million people, carries grave risks and uncertain outcomes. What does victory look like in Iran? What is the strategy to achieve it?

Above all, we must protect American service members and safeguard innocent civilians.
