Completed slope stabilization at Waimea Bay, March 31, 2026.

HONOLULU - The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) announces the slope stabilization at Waimea Bay below Kamehameha Highway has been completed. The makai lane of Kamehameha Highway between the Waimea Bay parking lot and ʻIliohu Way will reopen at 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 31.

The makai lane of Kamehameha Highway above the jumping rock at Waimea Bay was closed for slope stabilization work on March 18 following impacts of the first Kona low pressure system in March. HDOT initially expected the closure for the stabilization to continue until April 10.

Scope of the slope stabilization included soil anchors, drainage systems and a shotcrete wall, painted to blend with the landscape. Vegetation was cleared and erosion matting installed on lower slopes for long-term stabilization. The erosion matting is permeable and will allow for regrowth of vegetation on the lower slopes. All individuals are asked to stay off the matting to allow for the reestablishment of vegetation and to avoid disrupting contact between the matting and the slope.

HDOT thanks the Ko'olauloa community for their patience during the stabilization work. We appreciate the cooperation and understanding during the 24/7 single lane closure and the initial full nighttime closures.
