The University of Barcelona has concluded the UB × Gaza solidarity campaign with a final total of €7,546, exceeding its initial target. UNRWA is the leading agency in the provision of basic services to the refugee population, especially in emergency situations like this one.
The initiative, promoted by the UB in collaboration with UNRWA Spain, mobilized students, research and teaching staff, and the technical, management, and administrative and services staff. This collective response made it possible to achieve an extraordinary level of fundraising, which will help ensure essential services in the Palestinian territories, such as access to primary healthcare, the supply of drinking water to hundreds of families, and support for social and educational programmes.
Raquel Martí, executive director of UNRWA Spain, expressed her gratitude to the UB and its community for the commitment to the people in Palestine. "At a particularly critical moment for the people in Gaza, who continue to face a devastating humanitarian crisis even after the ceasefire, gestures like this are essential not only because they help sustain humanitarian aid, but also because they send a powerful message: that, despite all adversities, the Palestinian people are not alone", she said. Martí also stressed that initiatives such as that one by the UB highlight the essential role of civil society in denouncing the situation in Gaza.
The rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia, highlighted the institutional and civic value of this initiative, stressing that "the University cannot remain on the side-line of major humanitarian crises". According to Guàrdia, "this campaign reflects the UB's commitment to human rights, international solidarity and the social responsibility that a public university must assume, aslso as a space for critical awareness and collective mobilization."
Whit the UB × Gaza campaign, the UB strengthens its tradition of solidarity action, which is part of its institutional commitment to cooperation, peace and global justice. The initiative has once again highlighted the capacity of the university community to articulate collective responses to situations of extreme vulnerability and to contribute, from both the academic and social spheres, to addressing urgent humanitarian needs.
