Washington, D.C. - Tonight, Congressman Tom Barrett (MI-07) voted for the Secure America Act (S.2) to provide funding for Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which passed the House by a vote of 214-212. This is the fourth time since February that Barrett has voted to fund efforts to secure the border and combat the smuggling of deadly fentanyl into America.
"For 116 days, the historic progress we made to secure the southern border was jeopardized by a partisan refusal to fund the agencies responsible for that progress," said Barrett. "Tonight, Congress changed that by fully funding border patrol and customs enforcement working on the front lines every day to keep our border secure, stop fentanyl from flowing into our country, and keep our communities safe."
On February 14, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shut down following Congress' failure to pass a bill funding the department. On April 30, Congress passed a bill to fund most of DHS but excluded immigration enforcement and border security.
The Secure America Act will fully fund U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) through the year 2028. Specifically, the bill provides $38 billion for ICE, $26 billion for Border Patrol, and $5 billion for DHS contingency funding.
This bill does not include any funding for the Department of Justice's (DOJ) proposed weaponization fund or security enhancements related to the privately-funded East Wing renovations on the White House complex. It will strictly fund DHS's role in keeping our border secure, fentanyl off our streets, and America safe.
