A simple worry surrounds Alphabet (GOOGL) : the company is spending so much on technical infrastructure for AI that its business may not keep up. Alphabet spent $160 billion on buildings and equipment over the last twelve months, compared with $28.8 billion in the twelve months to September 2023. So what share of Alphabet's sales do you think goes to that bill today?
How Big Is Alphabet's Spending Bill?
That spending consumed 33.9% of Alphabet's sales over the last twelve months, up from 9.7% in the twelve months to September 2023. In dollars, the bill is about 5.5 times as large as it was three years ago. And it is still growing: Alphabet spent 114.4% more in the quarter to September 2026 than it did in the same quarter a year earlier.
Can Alphabet Pay For It?
Alphabet spent more on buildings and equipment than its business brought in as cash in the quarter to September 2026. In the same quarter a year earlier, that spending took only 49.5% of that cash.
| Fiscal quarter | Spending on buildings and equipment | Cash the business brought in | Cash left over |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q2 FY2025 (ended 2025-06-30) | $22.4 billion | $27.7 billion | $5.30 billion |
| Q3 FY2025 (ended 2025-09-30) | $24.0 billion | $48.4 billion | $24.5 billion |
| Q4 FY2025 (ended 2025-12-31) | $27.9 billion | $52.4 billion | $24.6 billion |
| Q1 FY2026 (ended 2026-03-31) | $35.7 billion | $45.8 billion | $10.1 billion |
| Q2 FY2026 (ended 2026-06-30) | $44.9 billion | $39.1 billion | -$5.85 billion |
| Q3 FY2026 (ended 2026-09-30) | $51.4 billion | $42.3 billion | -$9.06 billion |
Each row is one fiscal quarter. Cash left over is the cash the business brought in minus the spending (free cash flow). The spending leaves out equipment taken on through leases.
The cash left over after this spending went from a surplus to a shortfall, and it fell below zero in two of the last four quarters. Management said an inventory build for TPU system sales also held back cash in the latest quarter. Paying a 2018 fine in that quarter did as well. Even so, the business did not cover the bill on its own in the latest quarter.
Over the last twelve months, the business did still cover the bill. Spending stood at 89.0% of the cash the business brought in, but only because the quarters to December 2025 and March 2026 generated spare cash. Alphabet also ended September with $265 billion in cash and short-term investments, compared with $142 billion of debt. That cash includes $90.4 billion of stock Alphabet holds in other companies, and its debt was $33.7 billion a year earlier.
What Has The Spending Bought So Far?
Alphabet's twelve-month sales grew 58.5% over the three years to September 2026. The company spent $287 billion on buildings and equipment during that time, and its business now brings in $73.1 billion more cash a year than it did then.
At that rate, it would take Alphabet about 3.9 years of the extra cash to earn back what it spent, though the spending is not the only reason the business brings in more. Alphabet does not yet have more cash left over to show for it: the cash left after the spending over the last twelve months was 74.6% lower than it was three years earlier.
What Must Go Right For Alphabet
Alphabet needs the long-term demand it sees for Google Cloud to show up as sales and cash. Management said on the October 28 call that Google Cloud revenue grew 103% in the quarter, mainly on its AI infrastructure and solutions, and that the company is working hard to bring more capacity online for long-term demand.
Management kept its forecast of $195 billion to $205 billion of spending in 2026. The company expects the spending to increase significantly in 2027 and to put pressure on the cash left over. The number to watch each quarter is the cash Alphabet has left once the spending is paid, a figure that fell further below zero in the quarter to September 2026. The next report is expected in February 2027.
Does This Mean You Should Act On GOOGL?
Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.
There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
