Vogel, Kinkead Celebrate the 16th Season of the Capitol Hunger Garden

HARRISBURG - As the Penn State Master Gardeners, PA Vegetable Growers Association and volunteers gathered today to begin planting this season's produce, Sen. Elder Vogel, Jr. (R-47) and Rep. Emily Kinkead (D-20) provided the following statements celebrating the start of the Capitol Hunger Garden's 16th season.

"As a farmer, nothing truly beats being able to bring fresh produce to the table for your family after taking the time and dedication to grow and harvest your bounty," said Vogel, who also chairs the Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee. "What's even better is growing this produce and ensuring those who are less fortunate can also benefit from healthy, nutritious food options just like we do. As always, I appreciate the hard work of all involved in making this garden a prosperous one and Downtown Daily Bread for always providing the best service to those in need here in Harrisburg."

"With each new season of the Capitol Hunger Garden, we're reminded that addressing food insecurity is something we can act on right here at the state Capitol," Kinkead said. "Every seed planted and every pound of produce harvested represents a commitment to help Pennsylvanians facing hunger. I'm proud to continue this bipartisan effort to not only grow food, but to grow awareness and action toward ending hunger in our Commonwealth."

Vogel and Kinkead serve as co-chairs of the Legislative Hunger Caucus, whose mission is to advocate and support solutions for the hunger crisis that continues to affect residents of all 67 counties in the commonwealth. The Hunger Garden serves as a prime example of the caucus' dedication to helping those in need around the Harrisburg community.

Last year, the garden produced a record-breaking 1,192 pounds of produce and herbs, which greatly benefited Downtown Daily Bread and those they serve.

The state Department of General Services, PA Vegetable Growers Association, Penn State Master Gardeners and area volunteers are instrumental in keeping the garden maintained and flourishing each season.
