Senator Murray Slams Trump for Broken Promise on IVF and Warns of Growing Anti-IVF Extremism in GOP

The Right to IVF Act reintroduction comes nearly two years since Donald Trump promised free IVF for all, which he's still failed to deliver

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), a senior member and former chair of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), committee delivered the following remarks at a press conference on the reintroduction of the Right to IVF Act.

Senator Murray's remarks, as delivered, are below:

"We're here to talk about a bill that makes life easier for families going through IVF and dealing with infertility. We all recognize how difficult and painful that process can be for families.

"But I want to talk specifically about one piece of this bill, that I have pushed for, for literally over a decade: making sure our veterans and servicemembers can access and afford the IVF services they need to build their families. Especially, servicemembers who were injured during their service, as Tammy knows so well. You tell me what American doesn't believe we should offer IVF to the families who sacrificed for this country.

"This bill feels like common sense? It sounds like something Donald Trump who promised to make IVF 'free' would support! But Republicans, who talk a big game about being pro-family-don't actually support IVF-that's why they've blocked this bill before, along with others like it.

"In fact, at the Texas Republican party convention a few months ago, they said that IVF is about freezing babies and that 'IVF is wicked and needs to be abolished.' That's literally what they said before Texas Republicans made banning IVF a part of their official party platform.

"If you don't think the Republican lawmakers in this building are going to take those extremist activists seriously. I've got a bridge to sell you.

"Newsflash: the Speaker of the House believes an embryo should have the same rights as an adult woman with children who count on her. When I shouted about Republicans appointing Judges who would overturn Roe, a lot of the media brushed it off then as unserious and fearmongering.

"So, my message here to America's pro-choice, pro-IVF majority is to wake up. Trump doesn't care about IVF-he broke that promise. And even worse than Trump's indifference to IVF, is that he is willing to let this Republican Congress attack your reproductive rights in every way possible.

"Look, IVF has been a lifeline for so many people trying to build their families. The attacks on it have nothing to do with science, clearly.

"We can't let those unhinged views get anywhere near becoming law, and that means fighting back now, with our voices and our votes.

"While Republicans spread lies about health care, Democrats are here linking arms and standing with our families. And we're going to fight every day to make sure families get the reproductive care they deserve."
