Dennis Weedman named Illinois State University general counsel

President Aondover Tarhule has appointed Dennis Weedman as Illinois State University's next general counsel. Weedman will begin his duties November 1, 2026, replacing Jeannie Barrett, who resigned earlier this year.

"I am grateful to the search committee for its thoughtful work in bringing forward an exceptionally strong pool of candidates," said President Tarhule. "Dennis has served in this role on an interim basis since the spring, and during that time, he has demonstrated exceptional legal judgment, integrity, collaboration, and a strong commitment to serving our students, faculty, staff, and broader university community."

Weedman has served as interim general counsel since April 1, 2026, and previously as deputy general counsel. In these roles, he has advised the president, Cabinet, and campus leaders on a broad range of legal and regulatory matters, including risk management, policy development, employment and labor relations, collective bargaining, student matters, procurement, and litigation.

As general counsel, Weedman will provide strategic legal counsel and leadership as the University navigates an increasingly complex legal and regulatory environment while advancing its mission and upholding the principles of accountability, transparency, and responsible stewardship.

Before joining Illinois State, Weedman spent more than 22 years as a partner at Robbins Schwartz, where he represented public colleges, school districts, and other governmental entities. His extensive experience, combined with his institutional knowledge and practical understanding of Illinois State's legal and operational environment, positions him well to lead the Office of General Counsel.

Weedman earned his Bachelor of Art's degree in political science with a concentration in business and accountancy from the University of Illinois. He earned his Juris Doctor from the Southern Illinois University School of Law.
