Governor Ron DeSantis Highlights More than $20 Billion Investment to Widen Florida’s Turnpike and Improve Service Plazas

ORLANDO, Fla.- Today, Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted more than $20 billion in investments to revitalize Florida's Turnpike, expanding capacity along the entire 320-mile mainline from South Florida through Central Florida to I-75 in Wildwood. The Governor also announced nearly $8.5 million for new food concepts, amenities, and customer services at Turnpike service plazas, along with nearly $54 million to expand and improve truck parking across the system.

"As Florida has grown, we have made major investments in our transportation infrastructure to reduce congestion and improve our roadways," said Governor Ron DeSantis. "We've made significant investments in expanding lane capacity to relieve congestion all along the Turnpike. Today, I announced an additional investment to improve 19 restaurants and retail locations across six Turnpike service plazas. We will keep working to ensure that our roadways are safer, more convenient, and better-maintained than ever before."

"The Turnpike System is a vital part of this, which is why we've made significant investments to continue expanding the Mainline."

As part of FDOT's transformational plan to widen the entire 320-mile Turnpike Mainline from South Florida to Interstate 75 (I-75) in Wildwood, every section of the Mainline across the state will be expanded to between six or more lanes. Once complete, these improvements will add more than 965 lane miles of capacity to help reduce congestion, giving families more time together and less time in traffic.

Under Governor DeSantis' leadership, FDOT has added 384 lane miles across Florida's Turnpike System, including 179 lane miles along the Turnpike Mainline. With Governor DeSantis' vision to transform this critical route for travelers and freight traffic, this more than $20 billion Mainline Widening initiative has been a major focus during his administration and is currently 55 percent complete. These investments include major widening projects in Central and South Florida, delivering additional capacity and improving travel reliability along some of the state's busiest corridors.

Recent and ongoing Turnpike Mainline improvements include the widening from State Road (S.R.) 50 in Clermont to Hancock Road in Minneola, completed in June 2026, and the widening from the Dolphin Expressway (S.R. 836) to N.W. 106th Street in Miami-Dade County, completed in February 2024. The next section from N.W. 106th Street to I-75 recently opened to traffic.

The event also highlighted the recently updated food options, amenities, and other customer service enhancements at Turnpike service plazas, including renovated areas to enjoy its new and refreshed vendors of Jimmy John's, Zaxby's, Vending Oasis, and Villa Pizza.

FDOT will also provide enhancements for truckers, a critical customer of Florida's Turnpike. With a $53.8 million investment to expand and improve nearly 150 parking spaces at Turkey Lake and Ocoee Service Plazas, these improvements will provide commercial drivers with additional safe and reliable places to stop, eat, and rest while supporting Florida's supply chain.
