Her election is an important achievement of Lithuania and a significant contribution of our country to the strengthening of the UN policy on the rights of persons with disabilities.
The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is a body composed of 18 independent experts that monitors states parties' compliance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and issues recommendations to them.
Committee members are elected by the 193 states parties which have ratified the Convention via secret ballot with consideration given to the experience of the candidates, equitable geographical distribution, and balanced gender representation.
