The History of Skully

Millersville University's mascot has evolved significantly since the debut of the Millersville Marauder in the 1930s. (You can learn more about the early days of the Marauder's history here.)

The need for a secondary mascot - one that was approachable and welcoming - grew over the years and led to the hatching of Skully. Skully was created in 2004 by Raymond Entertainment, a company that custom designs and builds character brands that are an extension of organizations. This firm was founded by David Raymond, who was the original Phillie Phanatic. The parrot made his official Millersville debut on Oct. 23, 2004, during Homecoming festivities at Biemesderfer Stadium.

Since then, Skully has become a staple of the Millersville University community. An energetic and lovable personality, he makes appearances at many University and sporting events on campus.

Skully's character is shaped by a playful backstory. According to the Department of Campus Life, Skully was born "on a remote island, home of the last indigenous community of giant parrots. His egg was taken from the island where it magically hatched in Biesmesderfer Stadium."

The mascot is also said to enjoy Chick-fil-A waffle fries, birdseed, searching for treasure and practicing his "fly dance moves."

The beloved bird is brought to life by a mascot team of seven students. "It's a lot of fun and a great way to exemplify school spirit," said Andrew Kline, a member of the mascot team. "I enjoy making people happy through Skully."
