City of Raleigh Launches First-Ever Municipal Mulch Truck Program

Raleigh Transportation is excited to launch its new mulch truck program on December 1. This is the first program of its kind for any city on the East Coast. The new truck will bring locally recycled mulch to Raleigh's right-of-way landscapes, improving how our streets look and supporting long-term sustainability.

The truck is built for efficiency and operated by a three-person crew. It can mulch about 480 landscape beds across the city. Each load carries 45 to 50 yards of mulch, which is applied through a 300-foot blower hose for even and accurate coverage.

"This is a dream come true for our team and a major step forward in how we care for our city's landscapes," said Greg Tant, Right of Way Landscape Superintendent. "Raleigh has long been known for its clean streets and well-maintained turf. Now, with this mulch truck, we can add that finishing touch to enhance our neighborhoods for residents and visitors."

The mulch comes from the City's Yard Waste Center and is made from plant material collected from residents and storm debris. This keeps useful materials in the community and helps the environment by reducing weeds, saving water in the soil, and preventing erosion.

"City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services is excited to work with the Transportation Department to help keep Raleigh's streets landscaped and beautiful," said Tim Gainer, Solid Waste Services Supervisor. "The Yard Waste Center is proud to supply mulch made from materials our crews collect and residents drop off. This partnership is a sustainable solution that supports our community."

Crews will begin in low-traffic areas as they learn the new equipment. By May 2026, all City-maintained right-of-way areas are expected to have their first layer of mulch. After that, mulch will be applied each year to keep the landscapes healthy and attractive.

Raleigh Transportation expects to use about 10,000 yards of mulch each year. This will help refresh landscapes in neighborhoods across the city, from North Raleigh to South Raleigh and beyond. Major roads, including Western Boulevard, will also receive focused attention.

This $625,000 investment reflects Raleigh's commitment to efficiency, sustainability, and beautification. The new mulch truck program will help create a cleaner, more polished streetscape that residents can take pride in.
