Lauren Petley Receives Tenure and Promotion to Associate Professor at Clarkson University

Clarkson University has announced that Lauren Petley has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of psychology in the Lewis School of Health and Life Sciences.

Petley teaches many neuroscience courses, including perception, biological psychology and cognitive neuroscience. She also oversees the psychology department's Mental Health Experience course, which provides students with opportunities to shadow mental health professionals at local, state-run facilities.

A human neurophysiology expert, Petley examines how cognitive processes such as attention and memory shape hearing and speech communication. At Clarkson, her independent research on the fundamental mechanisms of auditory attention is complemented by collaborations on National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded projects that apply these findings to clinical populations, including children with auditory processing disorders and preterm infants at risk for impaired cognitive development.

Prior to joining Clarkson, she spent nearly a decade in research and development roles leading the creation of biomedical technologies for brain injury assessment and hearing.

Petley's scholarship also advances neuroscience education. Supported by a Tides Foundation Higher Ed XR Innovation grant, she is collaborating with Arizona State University to develop an extended reality learning tool for neuroanatomy.

Alongside her work in research and teaching, Petley has been recognized with Clarkson's Phalanx Commendable Service Award, serves as secretary of the Auditory Perception and Cognition Society, and is a fellow of the Psychonomic Society.

Petley earned her B.S. in Behavioral Neuroscience from Laurentian University and her Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Ottawa.
