ISBE's Illinois State Fair Exhibit Explores Education's Role in Illinois' Past, Present, and Future

Interactive display invites fairgoers to consider the skills students will need for the next 250 years

SPRINGFIELD - From one-room schoolhouses to preparing students for the careers of tomorrow, education has helped build Illinois' workforce, communities, and democracy for generations.

Through its interactive exhibit, "250 Years Forward: Preparing Illinois Students for What Comes Next," the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) invites 2026 Illinois State Fair visitors to explore the role education has played in the state's past, how today's schools are preparing students for success, and what skills could matter most in the next 250 years.

"For generations, education has opened doors to opportunity and helped build stronger communities across Illinois," said State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Sanders. "As we look ahead, our schools are preparing students not only for careers but also for civic engagement, lifelong learning, and leadership. We invite fairgoers to visit the exhibit, reflect on education's impact, and share their thoughts on the skills that will shape the next 250 years."

The exhibit is organized around three themes:

Then: How education helped build Illinois' workforce, communities, and democratic institutions over time.

Now: How today's Illinois schools are preparing students with foundational skills, career awareness, and civic understanding.

Next: What skills students will need over the next 250 years, including critical thinking, literacy, problem-solving, collaboration, and civic engagement.

As part of the exhibit, visitors of all ages will be invited to participate in an interactive activity centered on a simple question: What skill will matter most in the next 250 years? Fairgoers can share their ideas and see how others envision the future of learning, work, and civic life in Illinois.

In addition to family-friendly giveaways, ISBE will share resources that support students' academic, career, and personal success. Fairgoers can learn about career exploration opportunities, mental and behavioral health supports, and pathways to becoming an educator in Illinois.
