Speed humps to be reinstalled on three City streets, Sept. 9-11

(COLUMBIA, MO)- Beginning at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, City of Columbia Street division crews will reinstall speed humps and speed tables on three Columbia streets. The traffic calming features had previously been located at the same sites but were removed as part of recent mill and overlay pavement maintenance.

  • Tuesday, Sept. 9 - South Garth Avenue between Broadway and West Stewart Road
  • Wednesday, Sept. 10 - Alexander Avenue between West Worley Street and West Ash Street
  • Thursday, Sept. 11 - Primrose Drive between North Stadium Boulevard and Sunflower Street
No street closures will be necessary, but temporary lane closures are expected. Signs and flaggers will help drivers navigate through the work zone. Please drive with caution whenever workers are present.

Crews expect to complete the installations by 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, weather permitting. Any updates due to rain delays or other impacts will be posted to Columbia Public Works social media.

How speed humps differ from speed tables
Speed humps and speed tables serve the same purpose of slowing traffic but differ in design. A speed hump is designed to reduce vehicle speeds over a short distance. A speed table is longer and flatter on top, creating a raised section of roadway that vehicles cross more gradually. Because of their shape, speed tables are often placed at intersections or near crosswalks to improve pedestrian safety while still moderating vehicle speed.
