City Building Closures for Christmas Holiday and Garbage and Recycling Delays


DES MOINES, IOWA - Tuesday, December 23, 2025 -
Most City of Des Moines administration buildings will be closed on Thursday, December 25, and Friday, December 26, to observe the Christmas holiday and will reopen on Monday, December 29.

Garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection services will be delayed one day due to the holiday for residents with Thursday and Friday collection days. There will be no collection on Thursday, December 25; service will run one day late the rest of the week. Below is more information for disposing of common holiday items. Brenton Skating Plaza will be open for downtown ice skating with a view of the Des Moines skyline throughout the holidays with extended hours. Check the holiday hours and plan your downtown skating trip at DSM.city/Brenton.

All locations of the Des Moines Public Library will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 24, and remain closed Thursday, December 25 and Friday, December 26 before resuming regular hours on Saturday, December 27. For the full hours of Des Moines Public Libraries, visit DMPL.org.

  • Christmas trees will be collected on residents' normal collection days with a green Compost It! sticker attached and decorations removed. The stickers can be purchased from these metro locations.
  • For those hanging on to their Christmas tree, the City of Des Moines will continue to pick up trees with Compost It! stickers on normal collection days for the next month.
  • Wrapping paper may be recycled in your blue recycling cart, if it does not contain glitter or foil.
  • Cardboard boxes may be flattened and disposed of at the 24/7 Cardboard Drop-Off Center (110 SE 6th Street).
