BOULDER, Colo. - Just before noon today a person called to report two men pointing guns at each other in south Boulder.
In just 1 minute and 15 seconds, the Drone as First Responder deployed from the City of Boulder Public Safety Information Center had eyes on them. The two men were in separate trucks at a traffic light on Baseline near Broadway. Patrol officers swiftly responded and stopped both trucks. Officers then took both men into custody at gunpoint.
After further investigation, one man was released while the other, a felon with an active warrant out of Denver, was arrested after officers found a gun and nearly 30 grams of drugs (pictured here). The suspect, who is also a registered sex offender, has a criminal history that includes first-degree assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon by a previous offender and attempted commercial sex pimping of a child.
The suspect, Quinn Sims, 38, of Commerce City, was taken to jail on new charges including:
• misdemeanor third-degree assault,
• misdemeanor carrying a concealed firearm,
• felony possession of a weapon by a convicted felon,
• a special drug offender Level 1enhancement,
• felony drug distribution,
• felony unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and
• felony menacing.
"In less than two minutes our Drone as First Responder (DFR) was able to find two people reported to be threatening our community with guns and because of the coordination within our Public Safety Information Center (PSIC), we were able to coordinate our response to safely take them into custody without anyone being injured," Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn said.
"This is exactly why we have this center. From finding reported wildfires to arresting wanted individuals who come to Boulder with guns and drugs to yesterday's call where DFR was the first to tell us that another report of a guy with gun was actually unfounded, the PSIC is a game changer when it comes to keeping our community safe."
As in every criminal case, these charges are an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.
