Lincoln University Announces 2026 Sapphire Award Honorees

As Lincoln University of Missouri marks another Homecoming celebration, the tradition of honoring individuals whose lives reflect the spirit of excellence, leadership and service continues. The university is proud to announce the 2026 class of Sapphire Award honorees, one of the university's highest honors, established to recognize alumni and friends whose legacies have shaped, uplifted and strengthened the Blue Tiger tradition. The award celebrates individuals whose extraordinary service, achievement and commitment embody the very essence of Lincoln University.

This year's honorees will be inducted into the prestigious Sapphire Circle during the 160th Birthday Bash on Friday, Sept. 25, joining a legacy of excellence as treasured jewels of the university: brilliant, enduring and impactful.

Gene R. Lock, Class of 1965

When Lincoln University awarded Gene Lock a Curators' Scholarship in 1961, it made possible something no one in his family had done before: attend college. A native of Loose Creek, Missouri, he commuted to campus daily while working part-time on area poultry farms, earning his journalism degree in 1965 before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force.

Lock went on to retire as a Colonel, logging more than 100 combat missions in B-52s during the Vietnam era. When he left active duty in 1970, he pursued a master's degree in journalism while continuing to fly C-130 aircraft in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, later serving in USAF Reserve Public Affairs and rising to become the senior reservist in the Headquarters of Air Education and Training Command's Public Affairs Office.

In civilian life, Lock and his late wife, Susan Heinen, herself a Lincoln University graduate of the Class of 1966, built the Lock Agency, a Sacramento-based advertising and public relations firm, alongside a retail business. Together, they established the Lock-Heinen Scholarship, which has supported Lincoln University students for more than 20 years in gratitude for the opportunities LU opened to them. Lock continues to serve on the LU Alumni Council and resides in Sacramento and Mendocino, California.

"LU changed our life trajectories, all for the better," he said. "Paying it forward is thus a welcome duty, and one most enjoyed."

Hardy K. Dorsey Sr., Class of 1969

Throughout a distinguished career spanning business, higher education and community service, Hardy K. Dorsey Sr. has dedicated his life to expanding opportunity, developing future leaders and strengthening institutions that transform lives. After graduating from Lincoln University, he established an exceptional career with IBM, where he held numerous executive leadership positions and earned a reputation for strategic vision and organizational leadership.

Believing that education and professional opportunity have the power to change lives, Dorsey became one of the founding leaders of INROADS, Inc., a nationally recognized organization dedicated to preparing talented minority students for leadership careers in corporate America. Through internships, mentoring and leadership development, INROADS has helped thousands of students realize careers that may otherwise have remained beyond their reach.

His devotion to Lincoln University has remained steadfast throughout his career. As a former national president of the Lincoln University Alumni Association, Dorsey strengthened alumni engagement, encouraged philanthropic investment and promoted greater collaboration among graduates across the country. His legacy continues to influence countless lives through decades of executive leadership, educational advocacy and unwavering commitment to expanding opportunity for others.

Florene Calvin Dawkins, Class of 1977

For nearly five decades, Florene Calvin Dawkins has dedicated her life to advancing education, preserving history, enriching the arts and strengthening communities. A proud graduate of Lincoln University's Class of 1977, she devoted 38 years to public education, inspiring thousands of students while championing academic excellence and lifelong learning.

Equally significant has been her passion for preserving African American history and promoting the arts. Dawkins has become a respected leader in historic preservation and cultural advocacy, most notably through her leadership in restoring and preserving the historic Ma Rainey House, honoring the legacy of the legendary "Mother of the Blues."

Her extraordinary generosity toward Lincoln University includes the donation of valuable books, artwork and historical collections, as well as the establishment of the James Frank Presidential Art Award, a lasting tribute that encourages artistic excellence while honoring the legacy of one of the university's distinguished leaders. Her life's work is measured by the students she inspired, the history she preserved and the lasting investments she has made in Lincoln University and the broader community.

Her generosity continues to leave a lasting mark on Lincoln University, including through the latest addition to her donated art collection, which will be unveiled during the Florene Dawkins Art Exhibition: The Creation of a Collection event on Sept. 24.

Joe Cooper, Class of 1992

For more than three decades, Joe Cooper has exemplified the principles of servant leadership, mentorship and unwavering loyalty to Lincoln University. A proud graduate of the Class of 1992, earning a Bachelor of Science in animal science and agriculture, Cooper has dedicated his professional career and personal life to uplifting others and strengthening communities.

Lincoln University is more than Cooper's alma mater; it is the cornerstone of his family's history. With more than 60 family members earning degrees from the university across four generations, the Cooper family has become a remarkable example of Lincoln University's lasting impact on generations of leaders.

Professionally, Cooper has built a distinguished career spanning more than 25 years in the automotive industry, earning numerous customer service and exceptional achievement awards for his commitment to developing people and organizations. A proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated® for more than 35 years, he has also devoted countless hours to the Youth in Training program through Shalom City of Peace in Florissant, Missouri, helping young men develop character, confidence and leadership skills.

His personal philosophy, "If I can help others get their wants and needs in life, the Good Lord will continue to bless me with my wants and needs in life," reflects the servant leadership that has defined every stage of his life.

LaTonya AnNoor, Class of 2009

Throughout a career spanning nearly two decades in corporate leadership, LaTonya AnNoor has distinguished herself as an innovative executive, passionate mentor and dedicated advocate for leadership development whose influence reaches far beyond the workplace. As a proud graduate of Lincoln University's Class of 2009, she continues to exemplify the university's enduring commitment to excellence, service and transformational leadership.

In her distinguished career with Walmart, AnNoor has earned a reputation as a strategic leader committed to cultivating inclusive workplace cultures, developing high-performing teams and advancing organizational excellence. As chair of Women of Elite Excellence and a corporate philanthropy leader, she has devoted her leadership to creating pathways for women to grow professionally and lead confidently.

Her outstanding contributions have earned widespread recognition, including the prestigious DELUX Power 100 Award and the Black Girls Who Rock STL Award. Despite her success on a national stage, AnNoor has remained deeply connected to the institution that helped shape her leadership journey, proudly returning to Lincoln University to mentor students and encourage the next generation of Blue Tigers to pursue careers marked by purpose, integrity and service. Her leadership philosophy reflects the very essence of the Lincoln University experience: that success carries with it a responsibility to invest in others.
