Prime Minister Michal: The European Union must move forward more swiftly with the enlargement process

"A stronger and more united Europe is in the interests of all Europeans. Europe must keep its promises, and countries implementing reforms must see clear and tangible progress on the path to joining the European Union. The enlargement of the European Union is not merely a technical process, but a strategic investment in our common security and future," said Michal following the EU-Western Balkans Summit.

The Prime Minister highlighted the progress made by Montenegro, the host of the summit, towards accession to the European Union, and commended the country's reforms. "Montenegro has made very good progress. If the current pace of reform continues, the country is well on the way to becoming a member of the European Union in 2028. This would send an important signal to the whole region that reforms and a commitment to European values do yield results," said Michal.

Estonia supports the gradual integration of candidate countries into the European Union even before they become full members. According to the Prime Minister, this will help bring the benefits of European Union membership to the public more quickly and maintain the momentum of the reforms. "Candidate countries should be able to see the benefits of the integration process even before they actually become members," he said.

Michal emphasised that the success of the enlargement process also depends on adherence to the principles of the rule of law and resilience to external influence. "We encourage candidate countries to continue the fight against corruption, to strengthen the independence of the judiciary, and to safeguard freedom of the media. European countries must also be increasingly vigilant against disinformation and foreign influence. We must actively defend our democracy, expose false narratives, and prevent the spread of anything that undermines European unity and security," said Michal.

The EU-Western Balkans Summit addressed regional security, the enlargement of the European Union, and the integration of candidate countries into EU policies and the single market.
