The American Association of University Professors condemns unequivocally the recent and recurring bomb and terroristic threats against multiple historically Black colleges and universities. Several schools have been forced to lock down following these threats, severely hampering conditions for teaching and learning.
HBCUs hold a rich and indispensable place in the tapestry of American higher education. For generations they have advanced knowledge, nurtured leaders, preserved cultural heritage, and offered opportunities long denied elsewhere. Threats targeting HBCUs are attacks not only on individuals but on the legacy of resilience, excellence, and equity these institutions embody. The threats are a chilling reminder of the racism that remains pervasive in our society.
The AAUP stands in full solidarity with HBCU faculty, staff, students, administrators, and alumni. We call on law enforcement and governmental authorities to treat these threats with the seriousness they deserve: to investigate thoroughly, to hold responsible parties accountable under the law, and to strengthen preventive measures in partnership with campus communities. We also urge all higher education institutions and their stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to protecting free inquiry and fostering inclusive, secure learning environments. Higher education cannot fulfill its promise without ensuring that all institutions, especially those with legacies of overcoming exclusion, are safe, respected, and sustained.
