Court of Appeal Brings Appellate Proceedings to Calexico High School, Giving More Than 300 Students a Firsthand Look at the Judicial Process

SAN DIEGO - The Court of Appeal, Fourth Appellate District, Division One, brought the judicial process directly to the community on October 29, hosting a special oral argument session at Calexico High School. More than 300 students attended the event, providing them with a unique opportunity to observe appellate proceedings and gain firsthand insight into the work of the California judicial branch.

"The Court of Appeal's outreach efforts play an important role in helping students understand the judiciary's role in our constitutional system," said Administrative Presiding Justice Judith McConnell. "By bringing oral arguments into our schools and communities, we are making the judicial process more accessible, strengthening civic engagement, and encouraging the next generation to consider careers in public service."

In preparation for the event, attorneys from Imperial County met with students to introduce them to the appellate process and the cases being presented. On the day of the proceedings, representatives from the California Attorney General's Office and Appellate Defenders, Inc. discussed their respective roles in the appellate system. Students then observed experienced attorneys present oral arguments and asked the justices questions.

The program concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing students to engage directly with the justices and deepen their understanding of the judicial process. The experience brought classroom lessons to life and demonstrated the important role courts play in upholding the rule of law.

Following the event, Calexico High School Principal Lucio Padilla, Jr. shared his appreciation for the opportunity, stating:

"For the first time in our school's history, we had the extraordinary privilege of hosting a special oral argument session of the Fourth Appellate District, Division One. Over 300 students had the opportunity to witness our judicial system in action, bringing learning beyond the pages of a textbook."

This special outreach program reflects a collaborative commitment to civic education and community engagement among the Superior Court of Imperial County; the Court of Appeal, Fourth Appellate District, Division One; the Imperial County Office of Education; and Calexico High School.

The Fourth Appellate District remains committed to increasing public understanding of the judicial branch and providing meaningful opportunities for students and communities to engage with the courts.
