January 21, 2026

Interested in an international career or work in the State Department? The International Affairs Association is proud to announce that John Johnson of the University of Washington, a former diplomat with over 20 years of experience around the world, will be visiting campus to speak about his career and what Western students can do to prepare for future diplomatic positions while undergraduates.

In his time as a Foreign Service Officer, Johnson has held positions at U.S. Embassies in Indonesia, Afghanistan and Brussels, as well as at the U.S. Mission to NATO. An alum of the U.W. Russian language program, he specializes in policy advising, media engagement and communications during crises such as terrorist attacks and natural disasters, most notably during the fall of Kabul to Taliban forces in 2021. To learn about what it is like to work in Johnson's shoes and get information, resources and advice about the field, please join us at 4 p.m. in the Payne Lounge on the fourth floor of Arntzen Hall on Tuesday, January 27. Light refreshments will be provided.
