Rep. Goldman on the Introduction of Data Privacy Bill

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Craig Goldman (TX-12) issued the following statement on the introduction of the SECURE Data Act in the U.S. House. The bill establishes a robust national standard for privacy and data security to safeguard Americans' personal data.

"After 14 months of work, I am proud to join my colleagues on the House Energy and Commerce Data Privacy Working Group in introducing the SECURE Data Act. This bill marks a major step forward in protecting Americans' rights to their own data and strengthening safeguards for children and teens," said Congressman Goldman. "This bill applies proven privacy and data security standards, first established by states like Texas, to the entire nation. These are common sense policies that will better protect the personal data of all Americans."

"The Energy and Commerce Data Privacy Working Group was created to reset the discussion on comprehensive data privacy, taking wide ranging input from stakeholders and crafting a consensus bill that protects the privacy and security of Americans' personal data. The SECURE Data Act is the result. This bill establishes clear, enforceable protections so that Americans remain in charge of their own data and companies are held accountable for its safe keeping. We look forward to working with our colleagues to build support for this bill and advance data privacy protections fit for our 21st century economy," said Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and Congressman John Joyce, M.D. (PA-13), Leader of the Energy and Commerce Data Privacy Working Group.

Background:

First announced in February of 2025, the House Energy and Commerce Data Privacy Working Group spent more than a year developing the SECURE Data Act. Rather than imposing a top-down mandate from Washington, the bill builds on proven, state-tested solutions. The SECURE Data Act establishes important consumer privacy rights, sets reasonable requirements for businesses, creates enforcement mechanisms at both the federal and state levels, and strengthens the competitiveness of U.S. companies in global markets.

Support for the SECURE Data Act: Reps. Morgan Griffith (VA-09), Troy Balderson (OH-12), Jay Obernolte (CA-23), Russell Fry (SC-07), Nick Langworthy (NY-23), Tom Kean (NJ-07), and Julie Fedorchak (ND-AL).
