WASHINGTON - The National Park Service announced today the World War II Memorial will close on January 9 ahead of a construction project to modernize fountains and lighting at the memorial. The work will address aging infrastructure, improve reliability, and enhance the appearance of one of the nation's most visited memorials. The work is expected to be completed no later than May 15, weather and site conditions permitting.The nearly $3.7 million contract will include:
The work is part of ongoing work to rehabilitate and modernize fountains and related infrastructure at National Park Service sites across Washington, DC. All work will be carried out in accordance with federal standards for historic preservation to ensure protection of the memorial's historic fabric.
The memorial will be closed to ensure visitor safety during construction. Visitors should expect to find fencing and construction barriers, and some pedestrian routes may be adjusted during the work. The National Park Service apologizes for any inconvenience caused by these temporary closures and appreciates the public's patience as this important work is completed. Visitors are encouraged to follow posted signage and directions from NPS staff and contractors while visiting the memorial.
