Team Honda Racing entered the 58th running of the legendary BFGoodrich SCORE Baja 1000 with high expectations after Ethan Ebert qualified the #9T Honda HRC Passport Trophy Truck on pole position in the 2WD unlimited class.
Coming off a 2nd place finish at the Baja 500 earlier in the year, the team was ready to challenge for the win in desert racing's oldest, toughest and most prestigious event. Just like at the Baja 500, the Baja 1000 gave the team the chance to make a bold statement by running their Honda Passport V6 SUV up front against the larger V8 AWD trucks.
Race day began exactly as planned. Ebert and navigator Gatlan Haddon launched from the front and held the lead through the first pit stop, setting a strong pace and showcasing the performance of the HRC-built twin-turbo 3.5L V6-powered Passport against the field of high-horsepower V8 trucks. By race mile 280, the team was still leading and looking poised for a historic finish.
Unfortunately, Baja had other plans. A fuel issue forced the team to drop to fourth place, and by race mile 358 the team made the difficult but necessary decision to retire for safety reasons with a suspected punctured fuel cell.
Quotes
Jeff Proctor (Team Principal): "We felt like this was our race to win. Our entire team was laser-focused and prepared. This was not the result we expected when you plan and prepare the way we do for these big races. I'm extremely disappointed to have a mechanical take us out, and I apologize to our crew and driver teams who put in countless hours to get here and perform at a top level. As always, we will learn from this and, most importantly, make some changes."
