Albuquerque City Council rejects Rank Choice Voting in 6-3 vote

Albuquerque, NM - Last night, the Albuquerque City Council voted 6-3 to reject Rank Choice Voting as a replacement to the current runoff system. RPNM Chairwoman Amy Barela releases the following statement on last night's vote:

"I'm very grateful to the Albuquerque City Council for striking this down with last night's 6-3 vote," said Chairwoman Barela. Rank Choice Voting is bad for New Mexico and would disenfranchise a significant number of Albuquerque voters. First, ranked-choice voting will effectively destroy any trust Albuquerque voters have in the electoral process by adding layers of unneeded complexity to our elections. Second, it diminishes the voice many Republicans have in municipal elections by making it easier for Democrats to win. A complete rejection of Rank Choice Voting is common-sense and should be a sign that voters don't want this."
