"I was looking for something different. I didn't grow up around musical theater, but it was something I always wanted to try," Logan Tillmon shared.

Logan Tillmon performs in Once on this Island at Starlight Theatre.

Back in 2020, Logan took a leap of faith and auditioned for the production of Dreamgirls and was cast as a Stepp Sister and performed in the Ensemble. Little did she know, this moment was when her spark for musical theatre at Starlight began.

"There's so much talent in this area--the people you meet and the things you can create together. I just feel like it's special," she expressed. "This is a special place for so many people who can come be themselves and are just welcome. So, to see that go on for 60 years and to continue is amazing."

Due to the pandemic, Dreamgirls went live in 2022, and Logan continued to perform every year after that because she enjoys the experience of being on stage.

Other Starlight productions she appeared in include:

  • The Rocky Horror Show 2022 - Magenta
  • Footloose 2023 - Chicago Trio, Teacher, and Dance Ensemble
  • In the Heights 2023 - Ensemble
  • Legally Blonde 2024 - Gina
  • The Color Purple 2024 - Church Lady Jarene and Nettie Standby
  • The SpongeBob Musical 2025 - Sandy Cheeks
  • The Wedding Singer 2025 - Crystal, Ensemble, and Dance Captain
  • Once on This Island 2026 - Ti Moune

Logan has been a familiar presence on stage since her debut, and she's proud to continue performing alongside her parents, Reggie and Danita Tillmon.

Reggie appeared in The Color Purple as Ol'Mister and was thrilled to begin his musical theatre journey with his daughter. The following season was especially meaningful for the Tillmon family, as all three shared the stage to perform in The SpongeBob Musical. This marked Danita's first time performing, where she starred as Mrs. Puff and her husband was Perch Perkins.

Fast-forward to Starlight Theatre's sixtieth season, Reggie and his wife will be joining Logan for yet another production, Once on This Island. Reggie plays Tonton Julian, while Danita steps into the role of a Storyteller.

Before this show was announced, Logan had only heard cast mates and friends talk about it but never saw the production. After watching some of the clips and listening to the soundtrack, her love for the music and story grew, inspiring her to audition.

Reflecting on her time in this show, Logan shared, "I really enjoy the cast. My parents are there, some of my best friends are there, we got a lot of new people who came out, and some people who I've done shows with since I've been here--just a lot of moments backstage laughing."

The opening number stands out to her because it establishes the setting and atmosphere of the community based in Haiti while showcasing the town's togetherness through music and dance. She believes the scene sets the tone for the rest of the show.

"So, using the materials that they have to build these characters and put on the show for the little girl," Logan explained.

She described her character, Ti Moune, as being full of life and just wanting to explore what the world has to offer. As an orphan that was saved by the Gods, she goes on a journey to discover the meaning of her life and the reason as to why she was saved in the first place.

"I feel like this role is really different from myself--stepping out of my comfort zone, really pushing myself as an actor, and getting really into storytelling and emotions," said Logan. "I loved that whole process of getting to find myself in this character and really expand my talents as well."

Being slightly older than her character, she had to reflect on her life as a teenager and the youthful energy and zest for life that came with it.

Logan reflected, "It's different when you're kind of naïve, so experiencing and exploring that naïve joy and excitement for everything is like being childlike again--just remembering that everything is exciting and fun."

Her hope is that the audience takes away a sense of joy, being together, and lifting each other up, because to her, that's what this show is all about. The story poses the ultimate question, "Will love conquer death?" She explains that even though the journey is rough and doesn't end as expected, viewers can still take away the love and joy presented throughout.

She concludes with an inspiring message to remember, "Younger Logan would have never imagined she would be able to do any of this, and is so grateful. It's never too late!"
