Frontgrade CTO Discusses the Engineering Challenges Behind Smaller Military Spacecraft

In a recent Military Embedded Systems article, Lorne Graves, Chief Technology Officer at Frontgrade Technologies , discusses why smaller spacecraft don't necessarily mean simpler systems.

"The biggest misconception is that a smaller spacecraft is a simpler spacecraft," Graves explains. "Usually, you're trying to put more capability into less space."

As mission requirements evolve, spacecraft designers must accommodate greater processing, memory, communications, and autonomous capabilities without exceeding available power, thermal, or physical constraints. Decisions made in one part of the electronics architecture can introduce challenges elsewhere, making early consideration of system-level tradeoffs increasingly important.

Graves highlights how advances across processing, memory, RF, power electronics, and packaging are helping engineers address these challenges. The opportunity isn't simply to reduce component size, but to deliver greater mission capability while managing complexity and maintaining reliability.

For spacecraft developers, understanding these tradeoffs early can help avoid integration challenges, reduce unnecessary system complexity, and support more efficient development.
