TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Experience artwork that merges Cherokee and pop culture in imaginative and unexpected ways in a new exhibit at the Cherokee Cultural Pathway in downtown Tahlequah.
"Keli Gonzales: Drawn to Culture" is now open and runs through Oct. 4, 2026.
Cherokee Nation citizen and multimedia artist Keli Gonzales is inspired by pop culture, mixing the past and the present into breathtaking works of art. From digital graphics to acrylic paintings and murals, her work often includes Cherokee syllabary in honor of her great-grandparents, who were first-language Cherokee speakers.
"Keli's work has many layers. The vibrant colors grab your attention, but then you quickly see just how personal it is," said Karen Shade-Lanier, Cherokee Nation Cultural Tourism exhibits manager. "The art in this exhibit is a journey filled with images of Cherokee culture from yesterday and today, highlighting details of Cherokee life that are relatable in spirit and humor."
The exhibit features 11 large-scale reproductions of Gonzales' work, demonstrating her unique and vividly rendered reflections on Cherokee identity today.
The pathway opened in 2022 as an effort to improve safety and accessibility between downtown cultural sites. It has now transformed into an immersive experience, allowing visitors to connect with authentic Cherokee artists through rotating displays and permanent large-scale art installations
