NOF Grant Will Support Expansion of Douglas Community Arts Center

The historic South Side Community Art Center in Douglas will be expanded and improved through a $5 million Neighborhood Opportunity Fund (NOF) grant approved by City Council today.

The $12.8 million project at 3831 S. Michigan Ave. includes building system improvements and a 10,000-square-foot addition for art exhibitions and archival storage. The building was constructed in 1892 and designated a Chicago landmark in 1994.

South Side Community Art Center is the oldest African American art center of its type in the United States. It has operated in its current location since 1940.
