Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code 92507 (treatment of speech, language, voice, communication, and/or auditory processing disorder; individual) is currently under review as part of the American Medical Association's (AMA) ongoing CPT code maintenance and modernization process. The CPT Editorial Panel discussed proposed revisions to the code during its September meeting [PDF]. Following that discussion, CPT code 92507 has moved beyond the editorial review phase and is now in the valuation process.
This update builds on earlier ASHA communications confirming that CPT code 92507 remains in effect and there are no immediate changes to reporting requirements. Members looking for confirmation of current billing status can refer to the earlier ASHA news item: CPT Code 92507 Remains in Effect: No Immediate Changes.
In April 2024, CPT code 92507 was identified through a high-volume growth screen requested by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), after Medicare utilization of the code increased by at least 100% between 2017 and 2022. High-volume growth screens are designed to flag codes with significant utilization changes and serve as a trigger for further review of code description and valuation.
In response, ASHA-which represents the primary providers of speech-language pathology services-developed proposed revisions to better reflect contemporary clinical practice.
CPT code 92507 was established more than 30 years ago. Since then, advances in research, clinical knowledge, and technology have significantly changed how speech-language pathology services are delivered. Consistent with the AMA's broader efforts to modernize CPT code language, periodic review and updates are necessary to ensure codes accurately describe current practice.
After CPT codes are reviewed and updated by the AMA's CPT Editorial Panel, recommendations move to the valuation phase, where the AMA's Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) provides recommendations to Medicare on how clinician work should be valued. ASHA engages in both steps to advocate for appropriate representation and valuation for speech-language pathology services.
ASHA has been actively engaged in the CPT and Medicare payment processes for over 30 years. As a member of both the CPT Advisory Committee and the RUC Health Care Professional Advisory Committee (HCPAC), ASHA provides coding and clinical expertise, supports the development of coding proposals, and advocates for appropriate description and valuation of speech-language pathology services. Although parts of the CPT and valuation process are highly structured and confidential, ASHA remains committed to being as transparent as possible with members. By engaging directly, ASHA brings clinical expertise, data, and the real-world perspectives of practicing SLPs into decisions that affect how services are reported and reimbursed.
ASHA developed the proposed revisions related to CPT code 92507 after carefully reviewing current practice patterns and consulting with an expert panel of speech-language pathologists (SLPs), including subject matter experts and practicing clinicians. The goal is to accurately represent the specialized, complex, and highly skilled services SLPs provide.
The underlying times and values for the proposed codes are derived from the surveys fielded to a random sample of ASHA members in October 2025. ASHA presented these survey-derived recommendations to the RUC during its January 2026 meeting. The RUC will then submit its recommendations to CMS for the agency's consideration.
While CMS is not obliged to accept the RUC's recommendations, input from qualified health care professionals about the services they provide day to day is a critical component of the valuation process. Input from RUC and membership organizations, such as ASHA, helps ensure that the government adopts policies that more accurately reflect current clinical practice.
The CPT Editorial Panel's actions determine the CPT code set, including code structure and descriptors. The panel has approved a revised code structure to replace 92507, which is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027.
Valuation recommendations developed through the RUC process are advisory, and CMS retains final authority over Medicare payment rates under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule as well as Medicare coverage policy. CMS is expected to publish proposed payment information in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule in summer 2026, with finalized Medicare payment rates effective January 1, 2027.
ASHA will continue its long-standing advocacy by reviewing the proposed and final fee schedule, submitting formal comments to CMS, and advocating for appropriate valuation of speech-language pathology services.
Due to confidentiality requirements [PDF] associated with the AMA's code application and valuation process, the final outcomes of CPT Editorial Panel and RUC deliberations cannot be shared publicly until the AMA releases them.
Although CMS decisions apply directly to Medicare, many commercial and other third-party payers reference or adopt Medicare valuation and coverage policies when setting their own payment rates and coverage criteria. As a result, Medicare payment and coverage determinations may have broader implications across payer types.
ASHA recognizes that some members may be stressed and uncertain about the review of CPT code 92507 and its potential impact on practice. ASHA remains committed to advocating for speech-language pathology services, providing timely and transparent updates, and supporting members throughout this process as more information becomes available.
