Larson, Meeks File Resolution to Enforce War Powers Resolution in Court Against President Trump

Washington, D.C. - Today, Reps. John B. Larson (CT-01) and Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, introduced a resolution compelling the House of Representatives to file a lawsuit against President Donald J. Trump to enforce the War Powers Resolution.

After nearly five months, President Trump continues to wage an illegal war against Iran, in direct violation of Article I of the United States Constitution, and against the will of the United States Congress-which passed legislation in both chambers of Congressordering the President to cease hostilities. The introduction of this resolution follows Rep. Larson's announcement earlier this week that he is preparing legal actionagainst the Trump Administration and will be introducing legislation to cut off funding for the unauthorized war in Iran.

"While Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republicans continue to put Donald Trump above the United States Constitution, American servicemembers are paying the price with their lives," said Larson. "We must cut off funding for the illegal Iran war and take every available legal action to end it before more of our troops are killed. Both the House and Senate have spoken-this war needs to end now, and U.S. forces need to come home. President Trump and Secretary Hegseth are acting in defiance of the United States Congress and Constitution, and they must be held accountable. House leadership can't continue to sit on its hands. Our resolution will compel the House to take legal action to enforce the War Powers Act in court and bring this war to an end for good."

"The power to declare war rests unequivocally with Congress, yet Speaker Johnson and the vast majority of Republicans have allowed President Trump to trample over the Constitution and wage a war that has not been authorized by Congress," said Meeks. "Nevertheless, Democrats, together with the few Republicans who upheld their oath, successfully passed my Iran War Powers Resolution that requires the president to end his hostilities in Iran last month. Despite what the administration might say, I believe my War Powers Resolution is binding, and it is time to settle that question in the courts. As the Speaker of the House, Johnson must bring this suit forward. If the Speaker won't defend congressional prerogatives, we must compel him to do so, which is why I've introduced this legislation to force his hand."
