Commemorative 50c coin honours the Battle of Kapyong

Seventy-five years ago, in the steep hills of Korea, Australian soldiers faced one of the most intense battles of the Korean War. At the Battle of Kapyong, fought from 23 to 25 April 1951, courage, endurance and sacrifice shaped a defining moment in Australia's military history.

To mark this anniversary, the Royal Australian Mint is releasing a 2026 50 cent uncirculated commemorative coin honouring those who fought and remembering the 32 Australians who lost their lives during the battle.

The Korean War is often described as the forgotten war. Yet the bravery and resilience shown at Kapyong continue to hold a lasting place in the nation's memory. The coin's design reflects remembrance and connection between nations. At its centre, a sweeping view of the Kapyong valley stretches across the surface of the coin. Layered hills rise across the landscape, evoking the rugged terrain where Australian, Canadian and British battalions stood together to defend against advancing Chinese forces moving through the valley below.

On the right side of the design, soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment stand in a solemn line upon Hill 504. Their still and steady formation reflects the defensive stand taken during the battle as they fought to halt the advance toward Seoul.

The location of the battle is quietly marked through its latitude and longitude coordinates, anchoring the design to the ground where the events unfolded.

The lower portion of the image is a delicate lattice inspired by munsal, the decorative wooden frames found on traditional Korean doors and windows. The pattern forms a symbolic bridge between Australia and Korea. Wattle motifs weave through the lattice, representing Australia, while 32 red poppies bloom within the pattern. Each poppy honours one of the Australian soldiers who lost his life at Kapyong, a quiet and enduring tribute cast into the coin's surface.

Presented as a coin in card, the release invites Australians to pause, reflect and honour the service and sacrifice of those who fought at Kapyong.
