New Permanent Representative of Ireland Presents Credentials

Ambassador Martin Fraser is a distinguished Irish diplomat and senior public servant with four decades of experience in government administration, public policy, international relations and strategic leadership.

He served as Ambassador of Ireland to Great Britain from 2022 to 2026.

From 2011 to 2022, Ambassador Fraser served as Secretary General to the Government and Secretary General of the Department of the Taoiseach (Prime Minister), making him Ireland's most senior civil servant during a period marked by significant national and international challenges. In this capacity, he supported successive governments and played a central role in policy coordination and strategic decision-making across government.

During his tenure as Secretary General, Ambassador Fraser also chaired the National Security Council, National Economic and Social Council, and the Civil Service Management Board. He furthermore led a number of senior officials' groups dealing with major national priorities, including Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, the conflict in Ukraine, housing, climate action and national commemorations.

From 2007 to 2011, Ambassador Fraser served as Assistant Secretary General in the Department of the Taoiseach, with responsibility for a broad portfolio encompassing the Northern Ireland Peace Process, British-Irish relations, United States-Irish relations, economic policy, social policy and corporate affairs. In this role, he contributed to the advancement of Ireland's international partnerships and domestic policy agenda.

Earlier in his career, he served as Head of Corporate Affairs in the Department of the Taoiseach from 1999 to 2004. He previously held positions in the Department of Agriculture and Food from 1997 to 1999 and in the Department of Foreign Affairs from 1996 to 1997.

Ambassador Fraser began his public service career in the Department of Social Welfare, where he served from 1986 to 1996, gaining extensive experience in public administration, social policy, and information technology.

He holds a Master of Science (Economics) in policy studies from the University of Dublin (Trinity College) and the Institute of Public Administration, a Bachelor of Commerce degree from University College Dublin, and a Certificate in European Law from Dublin Institute of Technology.

Ambassador Fraser is married to Deirdre Fraser and they have two adult children.
