The Brazilian government strongly deplores the attacks against the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), carried out on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, which resulted in the death of a Serbian peacekeeper and left two others injured. Ten Brazilian military personnel are part of UNIFIL.
The Brazilian government expresses its sincere condolences to the victim's family and to the government of Serbia, and wishes the injured a swift and full recovery.
The growing number of attacks near UNIFIL positions is a cause for concern, having already claimed the lives of six other peacekeepers since the beginning of the current hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah on March 2. Deliberate attacks against peacekeeping personnel and United Nations facilities are unacceptable and constitute a serious violation of International Law, International Humanitarian Law, and United Nations Security Council resolutions, and may amount to war crimes.
Brazil reaffirms its unequivocal commitment to Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity and condemns the continued violations of the ceasefire by the parties, as well as Israel's ongoing occupation of part of Lebanese territory. In this context, Brazil calls on Israel to fulfill its obligations and immediately withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon, and urges the parties to fully comply with the terms of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006), which established the ceasefire that ended the 2006 war, and to bring about an immediate cessation of hostilities, with the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory.
