KENWOOD, Okla. - The Cherokee Nation is gathering to observe Woody Hair Day in honor of the late Woody Hair, a beloved first language Cherokee speaker and cultural fixture of the Kenwood community.

Cherokee Nation leaders will join community members in recognizing Woody Hair Day through fellowship, live music and a hog fry. Attendees can also register for door prizes.

In 2024, the tribe celebrated the grand opening of the Woody Hair Community Center, a $21 million investment complete with ballfields, as well as water infrastructure projects. The center has more than 10,000 annual visits by citizens for health and fitness opportunities, recreation and community activities and more. It is also the home to the Kenwood Elder Nutrition site.

Recently, a stickball pole was added to the site as well as the completion of a Marshal Service satellite office and a new Cherokee Nation Language Department office which are near the community center.

Cherokee Nation is invested in enhancing the well-being of rural, deeply Cherokee-populated communities with high concentration of fluent Speakers, like Kenwood.
