Miranda Lambert said she and Chris Stapleton "fully channeled" Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers when they teamed up to write their retro, '70s-inspired duet, "A Song To Sing."
That song led to Lambert's 10th solo studio record, Crisco, vibrantly blending country and disco, with musical inspirations spanning decades. Lambert reflected o the album process in a recent interview on CBS Mornings.
"I had already written 'A Song To Sing' with Chris Stapleton and Jessie Frasure," she said in a clip shared on Instagram. "And we fully channeled our inner Kenny and Dolly. In fact, our stylist, Tiffany Gifford, she pulled Dolly's earrings and a necklace of Kenny Rogers' out of the archives for us to wear. And so, like, we - I said earlier, committed to the bit. We went full '70s. Our outfits matched. We were skating in the Brentwood [Tennessee, located outside of Nashville] skating rink, and I just had so much fun with that, and I loved what it felt like. And it just kind of sparked this idea of, like, 'what if we wrote, like, a few [songs] and did a little EP, or something of, like, "Crisco" songs?'
Lambert released Crisco on October 2. The 12-track album also includes the title track, "Snakeskin Boots" withElla Langley, "Two Things Can Be True," "Sunset Marquis," and more.
"I've made a lot of records with a lot of heavy subjects over the years," Lambert reflected in a recent statement. "This album feels mostly lighthearted. It's refreshing to get up on stage and sing something fun. Making this record also unlocked a 'time to do whatever I want' feeling. Being able to create freely without putting parameters around my art has been really, really fun. I don't think I've ever smiled that much in the studio.
"I hope when people listen to Crisco, it feels familiar while also feeling fresh," the Grammy-winning country star added. "They can grab onto something that feels nostalgic, put their roller skates on and go on the journey with us."
