Turn Scraps Into Soil with Tucson's FoodCycle Program!
Every year, Americans throw away millions of tons of food, and when that food ends up in the landfill, it doesn't just rot harmlessly. Without oxygen, decomposing food creates methane gas, a greenhouse gas that's over 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in our atmosphere.
Here in Tucson, we're lucky to have the FoodCycle Program, a city initiative that helps residents fight food waste and learn how to compost the right way.
Here's how it works:
Attend a free, short workshop to learn the basics of composting- what can and can't go in, how it works, and why it matters.
You'll get a FREE countertop compost bucket to start collecting your food scraps at home.
You'll also get a list of drop-off locations all around Tucson where you can take your scraps to be turned into healthy, nutrient-rich soil instead of methane pollution.
Composting keeps food waste out of the landfill, cuts greenhouse gas emissions, and helps restore our desert soil! All while reducing wasted energy, water, and resources used to grow, transport, and produce food.
Food waste is not just an environmental issue but a call for mindfulness especially when nearly 10 percent of the world's population, about 800 million people, struggle with hunger every day. Let's rethink food waste.
