Media Advisory: San José Announces Start of Speed Safety Camera Program

State law AB 645 (Friedman), which was passed in October 2023, allows San José and five other California cities to test the use of automated speed enforcement, also called speed safety cameras. After a competitive procurement process, San José has selected a speed safety camera program vendor and begun installation at 33 locations. City officials will discuss the program scope and schedule, including the planned start of a 60-day warning period before ticketed enforcement begins.

More than 350 communities in 26 U.S. states and the District of Columbia are already using cameras to control speeding, to great effect. Just 18 months after San Francisco started using them in 2024, the city saw an 85% reduction in drivers traveling 10 miles an hour or more over the speed limit near camera locations. Globally, the use of speed safety cameras has reduced fatalities or serious injuries from crashes by as much as 44%.
