CU’s Collegian takes highest honor at 2025 Better Newspaper Contest

Cameron University's student-run newspaper, the Cameron Collegian, has received the 2025 Sequoyah Award, designating it as Oklahoma's top college newspaper. The award was given June 6 during the Oklahoma Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest. A contingent of Cameron students and recent graduates accompanied associate professor David Bublitz, who serves as the publication's faculty advisor, to the OPA's annual awards banquet in Norman.

It is the third consecutive Sequoyah Award that the Collegian has received and the fifth in its history.

Rounding out his 13th year as the newspaper's faculty advisor, Bublitz - a CU alumnus and former Collegian staff member himself - understands the effort these young journalists put into their publication and what it takes to win at the annual contest.

"I'm really glad that the student journalists who work so hard to tell Cameron's story are getting recognition off campus," Bublitz said. "I believe we have the best college newspaper in Oklahoma, but it's nice for the students to hear it from voices outside."

The Collegian competed against publications across Oklahoma in the College News Media division, taking first place in four Sequoyah categories - layout and design, photography, editorial writing, and sports coverage - and second in both news content and community leadership.

Collegian staff entered digital and print content from editions published during the spring and fall 2025 semesters into a variety of categories. Some categories have point values that apply towards the highly coveted Sequoyah Awards, which are presented to the overall winners in each division.

Individual awards were presented to Collegian journalists for their work in column writing, feature story, front page design and education story. Winners are Serenity Clark, Alyssa Martinez, Angelica Martinez, Kaley Muse, Amanda Purser and Jake Thomas.

The Cameron Collegian is one of the longest-published collegiate newspapers in Oklahoma, dating back to its establishment in September 1927 after the Cameron State School of Agriculture transitioned from a high school to a junior college.
