The City of Reno's Seniors EngAGED program, in partnership with AARP, is hosting the second annual Scam Jam Fraud Prevention Event for seniors. The event takes place on Thursday, April 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the McKinley Arts and Culture Center auditorium. The event is free to attend.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, total fraud losses by Americans over the age of 60 increased by 400 percent between 2020 and 2024. Seniors are most commonly targeted by scams involving investments, romance, tech support, imposters, and lottery schemes.
"This event provides seniors with the right tools they need to protect themselves from fraudulent activity," said Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve. "It's important for seniors to understand potential threats, and I encourage them to attend."
The event will feature representatives from the Better Business Bureau, the Reno Police Department, AARP, and more. Light refreshments will be provided while supplies last.
The Scam Jam Fraud Prevention Event is part of the Reno Seniors EngAGED program, which connects seniors with opportunities including resource fairs, free recreation classes, field trips, and more.
